BRASSERIE DE RANKE
The mass-disappearance of many small and medium-sized breweries in Belgium during the early 80's was a concern for the founders of De Ranke. It was believed that the breweries capable of making the best beers were affected. Outstanding and bitter beers were sweetened during that period to meet mass-consumption demands, assuming a dislike for the bitter taste. New techniques allowed the use of hop-extracts instead of hop-flowers, enabling cheaper production. Additionally, industrial manufacturers believed in neutralizing the taste of beer to reach the masses, supported by mass-marketing. These developments led to action being undertaken by De Ranke to prove that quality can only be guaranteed with the best raw materials and respect for traditional methods.
